The following is a summary of Division I News from the week of September 1-5:
• Rob Halvaks, chair of the new Administration Cabinet, spoke with The NCAA News about his thoughts on intercollegiate athletics and the future of the cabinet.
• The Academics Cabinet will hold its first meeting next week, and the group is expected to set its priorities for the future and review legislation.
• New Orleans Athletics Director Jim Miller spoke with the Double-A Zone about the impact of Hurricane Gustav on the Gulf area and preparations for this storm versus Hurricane Katrina.
• Gustav also caused the postponement of the LSU-Troy football game and the cancellation of other LSU-hosted athletics events.
• Tropical Storm Hanna is also wreaking havoc on some schools’ scheduling, forcing changes game locations and times in the Southeast.
• The Division I Softball Committee indicated it will release the RPI of teams on a weekly basis beginning next season.
