The Division I Academics Cabinet will set priorities and discuss how the group fits in the reorganized Division I governance structure when it meets for the first time September 8-9.

The cabinet is the first of six cabinets to meet after the restructuring became official September 1.

The group will also discuss transition matters from the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, reviewing the items identified by the various subcommittees of that cabinet as important to continue into the new structure. That examination will include initial-eligibility waiver policies and procedures, the impact of the new 16 core-course requirement, nontraditional-coursework issues, progress-toward-degree requirements and transfer issues.

The cabinet also will review legislation in the 2008-09 cycle and take a position on proposals referred to the body.

Among the legislation the cabinet will review are proposals that would require the NCAA Eligibility Center to distribute specific information about NCAA policies to prospective student-athletes. Other proposals include changing the international competition waiver standards, eliminating the church-mission exception to the transfer-residence requirement for specific transfers and allowing women’s ice hockey student-athletes to compete as all-stars in up to two contests against the U.S. national team in the year before the Winter Olympics.

The group will also review legislation sponsored the AEC Cabinet and discuss the early academic qualifiers program, which was approved in 2007 and allows prospective student-athletes meeting specific academic criteria the opportunity to receive early certification from the Eligibility Center.
