Division I rewindThe following is a summary of Division I news from the week of April 27-May 1.
• The Division I Board of Directors approved legislation shortening the period in which men’s basketball student-athletes can “test the waters” in the NBA draft and still return to complete their eligibility. The Board also discussed a variety of financial issues, including an updates study of college athletics financing, dashboard indicators and cost-saving initiatives undertaken by the membership and the national office.
• The Committee on Academic Performance fine-tuned the head coach APR portfolio system and reduced institutional burden by making the professional departure adjustment automatic instead of something that requires a specific request from athletics departments.
• The Chick-fil-A Bowl gave more than $300,000 to scholarship funds at 11 schools who participated in the Chick-fil-A challenge, a golf tournament pitting coaches and high-profile alumni from different schools against each other for scholarship money.
• The NCAA released the date and times for the 2009-10 bowl games.
