The Division I Committee on Academic Performance refined policies for collection of the head coaches’ Academic Progress Rate portfolio during its April 27-28 meeting in Indianapolis.

It also reviewed the most recent APR data before its public release May 6.

For the coaches’ portfolio, the committee approved a procedure by which institutions will submit and confirm information and a method for head coaches to review their information. The committee also decided that interim head coaches will not be included in the database.

Schools will submit information for head coaches in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, football, and women’s indoor and outdoor track this fall, with the database made available with the release of APR data in spring 2010. A significant portion of the data will be pre-populated for institutions, but schools will have to confirm data and provide dates of employment as well as enter data for the 2003-04 academic year. Institutions will be able to begin entering and confirming data in June 2009.

In another action, CAP decided to make the adjustments for student-athlete departures for a professional career automatic during the data-submission phase, beginning with collection this fall.

To earn the point, student-athletes must earn the eligibility point in the final term before the professional departure. The institution also must obtain supporting documentation of the departing student-athlete’s professional career.

Data show that of 2,776 requests for the pro-departure adjustment, 2,592 were approved, and those who were denied were due to a lack of supporting documentation or failure to earn the eligibility point. Making the adjustment automatic will reduce the burden on both member institutions and NCAA staff.
