The following is a summary of Division I News from the week of July 28-August 1:

•         On August 7, the Division I Board of Directors will reconsider legislation prohibiting men’s basketball coaches from observing nonscholastic events in April. Supporters of the legislation say it helps protect the academic interests of prospective men’s basketball student-athletes and addresses some of the concerns regarding the increased nonscholastic influences in the lives of high school athletes, while opponents believe the rule will increase recruiting costs and prevent coaches from seeing top talent competing together. •         The Division I Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Committee is considering holding concurrent championships. If approved, the change likely would not be implemented before 2010.

•         The Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee recommended a change to selection procedures that would allow student-athletes ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Top 60 for eligible doubles teams with two different partners to be selected in the doubles draw with the lower-seeded partner as an alternate.

•         The Southland Conference created a television network that will debut next month. Broadcasts will include regular-season football and basketball games and several conference championship contests. The network will also air a magazine program highlighting different people who make the Southland Conference successful, from student-athletes to coaches to administrators.
