A former Gannon University men’s swimming and diving head coach acted unethically when he provided $3,000 in extra financial aid to a student-athlete, according to a decision issued by the Division II Committee on Infractions.
This case was resolved through the summary disposition process, a cooperative effort where the involved parties collectively submit the case to the Committee on Infractions in written form. The NCAA enforcement staff, university and involved individuals must agree to the facts of the case in order for this process to be used instead of having a formal hearing.
The former coach did not promote an atmosphere of compliance when he made arrangements to give a student-athlete on the men’s swimming team $3,000. In order to get the money to the men’s swimmer, he increased a scholarship for a women’s swimmer by $4,000 and directed her parents to write a $3,000 check to the men’s swimmer.
Penalties and corrective measures prescribed by the committee include:
- Public reprimand and censure.
- A three-year show-cause order from April 28, 2016, through April 27, 2019, for the former coach. If he becomes employed by an NCAA school during the show-cause period, he and the school must appear before the Committee on Infractions to determine if the former coach’s athletically related duties should be limited.
Members of the Committees on Infractions are drawn from NCAA membership and members of the public. The members of the Division II Committee on Infractions who reviewed this case are Douglas D. Stinson III, associate athletics director of compliance, Central State University; and Jane Teixeira, associate commissioner and senior woman administrator, Pacific West Conference.
