The Division I Legislative Council on Thursday adopted two final proposals for the 2014-15 legislative cycle.
The first proposal extends to international students an opportunity already available to American college athletes.
The rule allows international prospects or current athletes to accept award money from their national Olympic governing body for winning medals in the Olympics in the same way prospects and athletes from the U.S. can accept money from the U.S. Olympic Committee. The opportunity is limited to one event per year that the governing body decides is the highest level of international competition for that year.
The second proposal, changes how penalties are applied for athletes who test positive for banned substances other than street drugs.
Under the current rule, if athletes test positive for a banned substance, they are ineligible for competition for 365 days. If he or she competes from the time of collection until the confirmation of the positive result, they must continue sitting out after their penalty period has ended for the same number of competitions they competed in between the test and learning the results.
The proposal adopted Thursday eliminates the requirement that the athlete sit out additional games after the penalty is served.
Both proposals will be considered final at the close of the Jan. 17 meeting of the Division I Board of Directors.
