Xavier Richardson

Texas-Pan American promoted Xavier Richardson from interim to head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach. Richardson had held the interim role since January 17. He previously spent three cross country seasons and two track campaigns as an assistant. He was an assistant at Virginia for two years before coming to the Broncs.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – VCU appointed David Benedict as interim director of athletics. Benedict has been the executive associate athletics director since 2010.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Virginia Tech named James Johnson head men’s basketball coach. Johnson returns to the Hokies, where he was on staff since 2007, after briefly accepting an assistant position at Clemson.

Men’s basketball assistants – Indiana added Kenny Johnson to its men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant. Johnson comes from Towson, where he joined the staff last season … Marty McGillan is Kennesaw State’s new assistant men’s basketball coach. McGillan was an assistant at Winthrop for five years … LSU named Robert Kirby assistant men’s basketball coach. He was the top assistant at Mississippi State from 1998-2010 and spent the last two seasons at Georgetown … Phil Cunningham is Western Kentucky’s new assistant men’s basketball coach. Cunningham spent the last 12 seasons on the sidelines at Mississippi.

Women’s basketball assistants – Marquette promoted Christina Quaye from graduate assistant to assistant women’s basketball coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Elon chose Josh Hexter as its first head women’s lacrosse coach. Hexter, who is currently Duke’s associate head coach, and his squad will begin competition in the spring of 2014.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – James Madison hired Scott Gerseny as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Gerseny has held similar roles at Towson, from 2008-12, and Eastern Kentucky, from 2005-08.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Bob Sorensen announced his retirement from his role as New York University’s head men’s swimming and diving coach after 32 years at the helm.

Staff

Sports information – St. Bonaventure elevated Jason McBain from assistant sports information director to sports information director. McBain held his previous position for two years.

Deaths

Southwestern (Texas) baseball coaching legend Jim Mallon died on February 26 at the age of 67. Mallon spent 1971-2004 with the team.
