Erin Hamlen

University of New England chose Erin Hamlen to lead its new women’s ice hockey program as head coach. The program will begin varsity play during the 2012-13 academic year. Hamlen was an assistant and associate head coach at New Hampshire from 2000-2010.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Carson-Newman chose Allen Morgan to replace the retiring David Barger as athletics director … New Orleans announced a search for a new athletics director. Current AD Amy Champion will remain employed in the same capacity until a hire is made.

Assistant athletics directors – Utah State hired Corey Ansfield as assistant athletics director for annual giving … Youngstown State appointed Emily Wollet assistant athletics director. Emily, a former track and field student-athlete with the Penguins, spent nine months as an NCAA postgraduate intern before returning to campus.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Central Michigan will not retain Ernie Zeigler as its head men’s basketball coach. Zeigler coached the Chippewas for six seasons … Illinois removed Bruce Weber from his role as head men’s basketball coach. Weber spent nine years leading the program … Nebraska relieved head men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler of his duties. Sadler spent six seasons as the Huskers’ head coach … SMU will not retain Matt Doherty as its head men’s basketball coach … Darrin Horn was released from his duties after four seasons as South Carolina’s head men’s basketball coach … Tulsa dismissed Doug Wojcik as head men’s basketball coach. Wojcik recently completed his seventh season with the program … Youngstown State signed head men’s basketball coach Jerry Slocum to a two-year contract extension. Slocum, who just finished his seventh season leading the program, will coach the Penguins through 2014.

Women’s basketball – Gustavus Adolphus head women’s basketball coach Mickey Hiller announced her resignation. Hiller led the program for 12 seasons … Indiana announced a search for a new women’s basketball coach to replace Felisha Legette-Jack. Legette-Jack recently completed her sixth season with the Hoosiers … Bob Lindsay was released as Kent State’s head women’s basketball coach … North Carolina Central opted not to renew the contract of head women’s basketball coach Joli Robinson. Robinson spent 16 seasons with the program … Providence head women’s basketball coach Phil Seymore is leaving to pursue other options. Seymore spent seven seasons with the program … Western Michigan will not retain Tasha McDowell as its head women’s basketball coach. McDowell recently finished her fourth season leading the program.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Paine named Latasha Colander Clark head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach.

Football – Georgia head football coach Mark Richt signed a three-year contract extension, keeping him with the Bulldogs through the 2016 season. Additionally, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham received a two-year extension.

Football assistants – Colgate chose Brad Dunlay as its new assistant offensive line coach. Dunlay comes from Georgetown, where he was the offensive line coach for six seasons … SMU named Bob Palcic offensive line coach. Palcic spent the last four seasons at UCLA.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – St. Lawrence head men’s ice hockey coach Joe Marsh is retiring following a 26-year stint with the Saints. Greg Carvel will take over the role.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Post chose Jim Griffin as the men’s lacrosse program’s inaugural head coach. The squad will begin practice in 2013 and competition the following year.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – South Carolina hired Spencer Lewis as an assistant men’s soccer coach. Lewis was an assistant at Newberry in 2010 and 2011 and played collegiately for the Gamecocks.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Illinois-Springfield named Noelle Rooke head women’s volleyball coach. Rooke was the head coach at Mercer for the past eight seasons.

Staff

Compliance – Northern Illinois hired Kiera Miller as a compliance coordinator. Miller comes from the NCAA national office, where she spent nine months in the postgraduate intern program.

Milestones

St. Mary’s (Maryland) head baseball coach Lew Jenkins earned his 300th career victory in his 18th season leading the Seahawks.

Deaths

Former Eastern College Athletic Conference on-ice official Matt Smith died after a battle with melanoma at the age of 45.
