The Record 6-14-12

Miami (Florida) hired Jennifer Strawley as a senior associate AD for administration and student excellence along with designating her as a senior woman administrator. Strawley will oversee academic affairs and the compliance office, and serve as the governance liaison to the NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference. Strawley comes to Miami from the NCAA national office, where she served as the director of academic and membership affairs.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Bowdoin AD Jeff Ward announced he will step down from his position at the end of July. He served as the Polar Bears’ AD for the last 14 years … Scott Jerome will serve as the interim AD at Alaska Fairbanks, replacing Forrest Karr who accepted a leadership position at Northern Michigan … Southern Arkansas appointed Steve Browning as director of athletics. He has served as the interim AD since December 1, 2011 and will continue his duties as head baseball coach.

Coaches

Baseball Rob Smith was hired as head coach at Ohio after spending the last six years as an assistant at Creighton. He is the ninth head coach in school history.

Women’s basketball – Delaware State named Tamika L. Louis as head coach. Louis comes to Delaware State after serving as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at George Mason during the 2011-12 season … Van Girard was hired as the head women’s coach at Western State after spending the last 24 years at Cal State Dominguez Hills where he was the winningest coach in school history.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field Derek Stanley steps into a new role as head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country teams at Wisconsin-La Crosse. Stanley was an assistant men's cross country coach and assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach for the Eagles in 2011-12.

Conferences

The Southland Conference will add two affiliate member institutions in 2012-13. Houston Baptist is scheduled to become a Southland member in all sports in 2013-14 and will begin conference play as a softball affiliate a year early. New Orleans will join as an affiliate in men’s tennis, remaining a Division I independent in other sports.

NCAA committee vacancies

Division I

The NCAA is soliciting nominations for an August 1, 2012, vacancy on the Divison I Wrestling Rules Committee. There are four available positions with preference given to an administrator and two coaches. The deadline for submitting nomination materials is June 29, 2012. Nominations must be submitted online (access code: conferenceonly1 –  password: 1906)
