The Record

Christopher Newport Athletics Director C.J. Woollum announced his retirement as AD to become the university’s athletics director emeritus, focusing on strengthening the school’s alumni base and support. Senior Associate Athletics Director Jon Waters, a Christopher Newport athletics administrator for the past 13 years, will serve as the interim AD through June 30, 2013. A national search for a director of athletics will be conducted with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2013.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – St. Cloud State hired former Drake associate AD Heather Weems as director of athletics. She is the first woman to hold that position at the school.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Brown named former Bears basketball standout Mike Martin as head coach. Martin, a 2004 Brown graduate, is the fourth youngest head men’s basketball coach in Division I … Norfolk State’s Anthony Evans agreed to a three-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Pennsylvania promoted Robin Martin from interim coach to head men’s track and field coach. Martin has been serving as the interim coach since Charlie Powell retired in December.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Trinity (Conn.) promoted Carson Duggan from interim to head women’s ice hockey coach. Duggan guided Trinity to a 15-11 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the New England Small College Athletic Conference as interim coach in 2011-12.

Men’s and women’s soccerChris Pfau was named head women’s coach at Houston after spending the last four seasons as the head women’s coach at Akron … Ursinus women’s coach Jeff Ykoruk will resign at the end of June after nine years with the program.

Softball assistantsNick Crawford, who played shortstop and second base for the UAB baseball team from 2008 to 2011, is returning to UAB as an assistant coach with the softball program.

Conferences

The Atlantic 10 Conference hired former Old Dominion women’s basketball coach Wendy Larry as associate commissioner. Larry, who spent 24 years as the head coach at Old Dominion, will oversee women’s basketball, including the A-10 women's basketball championship, officiating and two Olympic sport championships for the league.

Staff

Compliance – UAB hired Michael Derringer as its athletics compliance coordinator. Derringer previously was a compliance assistant at Eastern Kentucky.

Sport sponsorship

Augsburg will add women’s lacrosse as a varsity program beginning with the 2013-14 school year. Augsburg will be the first college or university in Minnesota to sponsor a varsity women’s lacrosse program.
