Michelle Collier

Jacksonville named Michelle Collier head women’s volleyball coach. Collier spent the last two seasons as an assistant at South Carolina. Prior to her stint with the Gamecocks, Collier was an assistant at her alma mater, South Florida, for two seasons.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – University of Charleston promoted long-time head women’s volleyball coach and associate athletics director Bren Stevens to athletics director. Stevens began coaching the volleyball team in 1992 … Mary Washington athletics director Edward Hegmann has announced that he will retire at the end of the school year. Hegmann is currently in his 36th year as an administrator at Mary Washington and also spent 23 years coaching the women’s tennis team … Otterbein athletic director and head men’s basketball coach Dirk Reynolds will retire from both positions at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season. Reynolds is in his 40th season leading the basketball program and has been the AD for 19 years.

Associate athletics directors – Kansas State promoted Casey Scott to senior associate athletics director for operations and event management, Laird Veatch to senior associate athletics director for strategic initiatives, Chad Weiberg to senior associate athletics director for development and Mike Clark to senior director of development … Manhattan appointed Noah LeFevre senior associate director of athletics. LeFevre was the athletic director at College at Brockport since 2010.

Coaches

Men’s and women’s soccer – Macalester head men’s soccer coach Ian Barker is resigning to become director of coaching at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Barker has been head coach at Macalester since 2003 and was an assistant with the program four years before that … SUNY Cortland hired Steve Axtell as its interim head men’s soccer coach. Axtell replaces Dwight Hornibrook, who is leaving after eight seasons.

Staff

Video operations – Daronce Daniels is returning to his alma mater, Elon, as athletics video coordinator. Daniels played football for the Phoenix and most recently was a video producer at Radio-One Cincinnati.

Conferences

The Big South Conference has added Longwood as a full member effective the 2012-13 academic year. The addition brings Big South membership to 12 institutions for the first time in league history … Sue Penicka is stepping down as the North Coast Athletic Conference’s assistant director after 13 years. Additionally, Dan Rolinc has been named assistant to the executive director … Schreiner accepted an invitation to join the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference beginning with the 2013-14 academic year. The seventh member of the conference, Schreiner has previously been part of the American Southwest Conference since 1998.

Deaths

Former Quinnipiac head men’s ice hockey coach Jim Armstrong passed away on January 21 from a brief illness. Armstrong coached the squad from 1980-1994. He was 68 … Eleanor Kay “Pete” Hess, long-time professor, administrator and coach at Swarthmore, died at the age of 87. Hess spent 33 years overall at Swarthmore and retired from the college in 1990.
