Kansas added Rob Ianello to its football staff as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. The head coach at Akron for the past two seasons, Ianello was previously an assistant for five years under new head coach Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. Additionally, Kansas retained Buddy Wyatt as defensive line coach. Wyatt will enter his third season on the Jayhawks’ staff.

Other transactions

David Fontaine

Athletics directors – Utica appointed David Fontaine director of physical education and athletics. Fontaine is a former Utica student-athlete, head coach and athletics administrator. Most recently, Fontaine worked in pharmaceuticals.

Coaches

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Chicago added Laurie McElroy to its track and field coaching staff as associate head coach. McElroy spent the last nine seasons as an assistant coach at North Texas.

Football assistants – Akron hired Chuck Amato as its associate head coach and defensive coordinator. Amato was most recently the executive head coach from 2007-09 at Florida State and has head coaching experience at North Carolina State … Chicago promoted Ernest Moore to defensive coordinator. Moore spent his first season with the Maroons in 2011 as their defensive backs coach … Indiana named Seth Littrell offensive coordinator. Littrell spent the past three seasons at Arizona. Current assistant coach Kevin Johns will serve as assistant offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Amy Hendrichovsky is South Alabama’s new head women’s volleyball coach. Hendrichovsky spent the previous six seasons as an assistant at Middle Tennessee … Syracuse chose Leonid Yelin to lead its women’s volleyball program as head coach. Yelin was the head coach at Louisville from 1996-2010 and spent last season as an assistant at Colorado.

Conferences

The recently formed Southern Athletic Association named Jay Gardiner commissioner. Gardiner is currently the athletics director at Oglethorpe and has been leading the conference on an interim basis since its inception in June.

Sport sponsorship

Adams State will sponsor baseball after a 35-year hiatus. The Grizzlies will play a partial schedule during the 2012-13 academic year before playing a full slate in the spring of 2014. Baseball will be the institution’s 21st varsity sport.
