Sharon Fanning-Otis

Mississippi State head women’s basketball coach Sharon Fanning-Otis will retire at the conclusion of this season. She will move into an athletics development position with the institution. Fanning-Otis is in her 36th year as a head coach overall, including the last 17 with the Bulldogs.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Carson-Newman Athletics Director David Barger will retire on April 30. Barger has worked with the athletics department since 1980, including the last 19 in the role of athletics director … Grambling appointed Percy Caldwell as its new athletics director … Bob Beeman, Hamline athletics director for the past four years, announced his resignation.

Assistant athletics directors – Georgia State named Erik Paz assistant director of athletics for compliance. Paz spent nearly four years as Marshall’s assistant compliance director.

Coaches

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Albion hired Kristin Slamer as its new head women’s volleyball coach. Slamer, a former Albion volleyball player, has previous collegiate coaching experience at Northern Michigan and most recently coached at the high school level.

Conferences

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference was approved by the Division II Membership Committee as a member conference. The goal of the conference is to begin competition in September 2013 after a yearlong educational assessment program.

Miscellaneous

Wisconsin is naming its ice hockey playing surface “Bob Johnson Rink” after legendary head coach Bob Johnson. Johnson coached the Badgers for 15 seasons, leading them to three national championships.
