Brian Heffernan

Flagler hired Brian Heffernan as its head women’s volleyball coach. Heffernan spent the last four years as an assistant coach at Wisconsin and was Washington State’s head coach from 2004-07. He succeeds Taylor Mott, who resigned to relocate with her family.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Minnesota director of athletics Joel Maturi will retire June 30, 2012. Maturi spent the past 10 years in the role.

Associate athletics directors – Jacksonville State appointed Ed Lett associate athletic director for external affairs. Lett, a former Gamecock quarterback, spent the last 15 years in the medical field.

Coaches

Football assistants – Buffalo named Lou Tepper defensive coordinator. Tepper has previous head coaching experience at Illinois, Edinboro and Indiana (Pennsylvania). Additionally, Tepper has served as defensive coordinator at LSU, Illinois and Colorado ...  Georgia Tech announced the resignation of assistant football coach Todd Spencer … Montana State added Demo Odems to its football coaching staff as running backs coach … After originally joining West Virginia as a defensive assistant January 20, Mike Smith is returning to the New York Jets as outside linebackers coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer – South Dakota Mines chose former Drake assistant Jon Burger as its first head men’s soccer coach. The program will begin play in the fall of 2012.

Sport sponsorship

Chowan added women’s lacrosse as its 14th varsity sport. The squad will begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year.
