Lonnie Blow, Jr.

Saint Augustine’s hired Lonnie Blow, Jr. as its head men’s basketball coach. This is Blow’s second stint with the Falcons, as he previously led the squad from 2008-2010. He was the top assistant at Old Dominion in the two seasons between. Blow has also been an assistant at Norfolk State and Hampton.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Hampton selected Malcolm “Zeke” Avery as its interim director of athletics. Avery has previously spent 19 years with the university, including a three-year stint as director of athletics … Hastings named Jerry Schmutte director of athletics. He replaces the retiring Ian Roberts … Millikin appointed Craig White as its director of athletics. White was most recently an associate athletics director at Georgia … Trine elevated head football coach Matt Land to athletics director. Land, who has coached the football team since 2006, will continue those duties as well.

Associate athletics directors – UC Riverside hired Eric Buskirk as its senior associate athletics director for development. Buskirk spent the last five years at Louisiana Tech.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Chowan named Brett Vincent head men’s basketball coach. Vincent comes from Fairmont State, where he spent the last eight seasons as an assistant, associate head coach and interim head coach … Middle Tennessee and head men’s basketball coach Kermit Davis agreed to a new five-year contract … North Texas chose Tony Benford to lead its men’s basketball program as head coach. Benford has 20 years of Division I coaching experience, including the last four as an assistant at Marquette.

Men’s basketball assistants – Nebraska hired Craig Smith as an assistant men’s basketball coach and named Gregory Eaton video coordinator … North Texas added Bart Lundy to its men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant. Lundy was Marquette’s director of basketball operations for the last three seasons … SMU named Tim Jankovich associate head men’s basketball coach. Jankovich comes from Illinois State, where he spent the last five seasons as head coach. Additionally, former Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard is now an assistant men’s basketball coach with the Mustangs … Wake Forest selected Randolph Childress as its new director of player development. Childress has served in an administrative role with the athletic department since August.

Women’s basketball – Christopher Newport hired Bill Broderick as its new head women’s basketball coach. Broderick was a Bucknell assistant coach for two seasons … Kristen Holt resigned from her role as head women’s basketball coach at Colorado State after four seasons. Dick Lien is the interim head coach … Eastern Michigan named Tory Verdi assistant women’s basketball coach. Verdi was an assistant at Kansas the past two years … Nitra Perry is the new head women’s basketball coach at Kennesaw State. Perry spent the last four seasons on Toledo’s coaching staff, most recently as associate head coach … Oral Roberts elevated Misti Cussen to head women’s basketball coach. Cussen was an assistant for the squad the last 16 seasons … St. John’s (New York) promoted Joe Tartamella from assistant to head women’s basketball coach. Tartamella spent the last nine years with the Red Storm program … Saint Francis selected Joe Haigh as its head women’s basketball coach. Haigh has spent the last four seasons as the top assistant at Saint Francis … Jerry Finkbeiner is Utah State’s new head women’s basketball coach. Finkbeiner was Oral Roberts’ head coach the last 16 years.

Women’s basketball assistants – Michigan State added Mark Simons as an assistant women’s basketball coach. Simons was an assistant at Auburn the last four seasons … North Dakota State women’s basketball assistants Jaime Berry and Ali Prichard both resigned.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Emory & Henry named Tom Antenucci head men’s and women’s cross country coach. He will also serve as facility operations coordinator.

Football – Jody Sears will lead the Weber State football program in 2012 as interim head coach. Sears joined the team in the spring of 2012 as defensive coordinator, a role he will also continue to perform.

Men’s and women’s golf – Arizona head men’s golf coach Rick LaRose will retire at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season. LaRose is in his 34th season as men’s golf coach and 39th overall with the university. He will remain on staff as a part-time special assistant to the director of athletics … Kalamazoo named Mitch Wilson head men’s golf coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Wyoming hired Dean Clower as its head women’s tennis coach. Clower has been the interim head coach for the Cowgirls and an assistant with the squad for four seasons.

Deaths

Alabama A&M defensive line coach Benjamin Blacknall passed away. Blacknall had been on the coaching staff for six seasons and was also Delaware State’s head coach from 2000-2003.
