Vermont to host Lacrosse for a Cure event

Sixteen Division I college lacrosse teams will face off in scrimmages at the University of Vermont’s Catamount Classic on Oct. 9. 

The fourth annual event, called “Lacrosse for a Cure,” gathers eight men’s and eight women’s squads to generate funds to support cancer research and care at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 

Participating teams are:

• Women’s division: Boston U., Brown, Bryant, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Iona, Siena and Vermont
• Men’s division: Brown, Bryant, Hartford, Holy Cross, Massachusetts, Providence, Sacred Heart and Vermont

Vermont head men’s lacrosse coach Ryan Curtis and his wife Kelly started the Lacrosse for a Cure event in 2008. Ryan and Kelly previously lived in Boston before moving to Vermont. While living in Boston, Kelly worked at Dana-Farber in genitourinary oncology. Together, with the help of the men’s lacrosse team, they have found a way to raise awareness for genitourinary and women’s cancers at Dana-Farber.

The Catamount Classic is regarded as a premier fall lacrosse event for New England college lacrosse fans and teams to culminate the nontraditional season in the sport. In 2010, the event raised more than $36,000 to support testicular cancer research and care at Dana-Farber, bringing the total event proceeds to nearly $100,000 over three years.
