Phil Schuman

Campbell named Phil Schuman its first head women’s lacrosse coach. Schuman comes from High Point, where he was an assistant. He also been the head coach at Methodist. Campbell’s women’s lacrosse team will begin competition in 2013.

Other transactions

Associate athletics directors – Eastern hired David Jones as its associate athletics director. Jones was the director of operations for Western Kentucky baseball from 2009-2011 … Illinois appointed Jason Lener executive senior associate athletics director. Lener has served as deputy athletics director at Miami (Ohio) since 2006.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – San Francisco and head men’s basketball coach Rex Walters agreed to a contract that will run through the 2015-16 season. Walters is in his fourth year as head coach.

Men’s basketball assistants – Saint Michael’s added Jon Rock to its men’s basketball coaching staff on Oct. 10. Rock was an assistant at his alma mater, Norwich, the past four seasons … Syracuse released associate head men’s basketball coach Bernie Fine.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Jason Vigilante, director of Virginia cross country and track and field, resigned. He had been with the Cavaliers since 2008.

Football – Arizona chose Rich Rodriguez to lead its football program as head coach. Rodriguez has previous head coaching experience at Salem, Glenville State, West Virginia and Michigan … Columbia head football coach Norries Wilson has been relieved of his duties after joining the program in 2005 … Fordham relieved head football coach Tom Masella of his duties … Ron Zook will not be retained as Illinois’ head football coach after seven seasons. Defensive coordinator Vic Koenning will serve as interim head coach … Kansas head football coach Turner Gill was released after two seasons. Recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell is the interim coach … Massachusetts head football coach Kevin Morris was released from his contract. Morris had coached with the Minutemen since 2004, taking the head spot in 2009 … Memphis let Larry Porter go after two seasons as head football coach … Miami (Florida) extended the contract of head football coach Al Golden through 2020. Golden just completed his first year at the helm … Southeastern Louisiana relieved head football coach Mike Lucas of his duties after five years at the helm … Texas Southern officially announced a search for a new head football coach. Interim head coach Kevin Ramsey, who took over when Johnnie Cole was let go in April, will be a candidate.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – St. Andrew’s appointed Christopher Sherman head men’s lacrosse coach. Sherman joined the staff in 2010 as an assistant.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Felician head men’s soccer coach Simon Nee resigned. Nee was named the Golden Falcons’ head coach in 2010 after three years as an assistant with the program.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistants – Saint Michael’s named Chris Cochran and Logan St. Peter diving coach and assistant swimming coach, respectively.

Men’s and women’s tennis assistants – Fairleigh Dickinson added Jonathan Buchman to its men’s and women’s tennis coaching staffs as an assistant. 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Mount St. Vincent hired Michael Quinn as its head men’s volleyball coach. Quinn recently played for the Dolphins, serving as team captain his junior and senior seasons.

Conferences

Houston Baptist will join the Southland Conference on July 1, 2013. The Huskies will be the 11th member of the league.

Sport sponsorship

Mount Olive will add men’s lacrosse in 2012-13 as its 19th varsity sport. Mike Lawson will be the head coach.

Deaths

Johnson State men’s golf coach and alum Lou Jarvis died Sept. 30 after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer. He was 62. Jarvis led the Johnson State men’s golf team since the varsity program was revived in the fall of 2009. The school on Nov. 9 named Bill Boldwin, who had been serving as interim head coach since Jarvis’ death, as his replacement … UCLA men’s basketball great Walt Hazzard died following a long illness at 69. Hazzard was the co-captain of the Bruins’ first championship team in 1964 and coached UCLA from 1984-88.
