CoSIDA announces baseball scholar teams

Senior catcher Matt Rice of Western Kentucky and junior third baseman Bryan Lippincott of Concordia-St. Paul lead the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Baseball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Rice and Lippincott were selected as the winners of the Academic All-America of the Year award in the university and college divisions, respectively.

A mechanical engineering major with a 4.0 grade-point average, Rice was a second-team selection as a junior and earned third-team honors as a sophomore. This year, he is batting a team-high .352 with 44 runs scored, 14 doubles, nine home runs and 56 runs batted in. He helped lead the Hilltoppers to a 32-22 record and a fourth-place finish in the Sun Belt Conference regular-season standings.

Lippincott is a finance major who also sports a 4.0 GPA. He ranks among Division II leaders with a .434 batting average. Although the Golden Bears had 18 games canceled due to weather, Lippincott scored 38 runs in 34 games with 17 doubles, six home runs and 39 runs batted in. He hit safely in 31 of 34 games while leading the Golden Bears to an 18-16 record.
