The College Sports Information Directors of America has named its 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s and Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country Teams.

On the women’s side, Oregon sophomore Jordan Hasay and New Haven graduate student Shannon Gagne were chosen as winners of the Academic All-America of the Year award in the university and college divisions, respectively.

On the men’s team, Brigham Young junior Miles Batty and Muhlenberg senior Bobby Torphy were named Academic All-Americans of the Year for the university and college divisions, respectively.

Hasay is the first sophomore ever to be named Academic All-America of the Year in any sport. A human physiology major with a 3.96 grade-point average, Hasay won two NCAA indoor championships this year in the mile and 3,000 meters while leading Oregon to its second consecutive national championship.

Gagne is pursuing her master’s degree in national security after graduating from New Haven with a degree in criminal justice and a 3.93 GPA. She was honored as the USTFCCCA Division II Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2011.

Batty, a neuroscience and exercise science major with a 3.95 GPA, was the NCAA Division I champion in the indoor mile. A member of the NCAA champion indoor distance medley relay team, he helped Brigham Young finish third at the NCAA indoor meet and was honored as the NCAA Indoor Athlete of the Year.

Torphy is biochemistry major with a 4.00 GPA. He received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was a two-time NCAA Elite 88 Award winner for Muhlenberg. A two-time NCAA qualifier in both cross country and track, Torphy earned Division III All-America honors on the Mules’ fourth place distance medley relay team.
