New issue of Champion available online

The Winter 2011 issue of Champion magazine is now available online.

Winter 2011 issue

This issue of the NCAA’s official quarterly publication features Caltech volleyball and basketball student-athlete Teri Juarez on the cover. In addition to being an accomplished athlete, Juarez is working with NASA to improve the thermodynamics on a Venus lander with a device that will transmit data quickly before the unit succumbs to the impossible temperatures there. Juarez is a great example of a multisport student-athlete who takes advantage of all the college campus has to offer.

Other NCAA profiles in this issue include basketball icon Tom Jernstedt; Division I Women’s Basketball Committee chair Marilyn McNeil; Grand Valley State Athletics Director Tim Selgo; Moravian President Christopher Thomforde (who was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1967); Texas A&M track coach Pat Henry; and Robin Harris, who succeeded Jeff Orleans as executive director of the Ivy League. The Thomforde piece also includes an exclusive online sidebar featuring Princeton Athletics Director Gary Walters.

The three comprehensive features in the Winter 2011 issue include a look behind the scenes with the NCAA’s new broadcast partner, Turner Sports.

Also, the 2011 Convention marked the 30th anniversary of the 1981 gathering in Miami (during which a freakish cold front affected the proceedings) when delegates debated whether the NCAA should incorporate women’s sports into its structure.

The third feature focuses on the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, which is building an intercollegiate athletics program from scratch and applying to be a member of Division II.

Other highlights in this issue of Champion:

Division I’s comprehensive review of basketball recruiting and an ethics committee the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association has established to protect the women’s game.

Next steps for Division II to study membership growth.

Division III’s consideration of a dashboard indicator model to help inform athletics spending decisions.

A summary of fall championships.
