Tim DeRuyter

Fresno State chose Tim DeRuyter to lead its football program as head coach. DeRuyter was the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M since 2010 and was the team’s interim head coach for the last two weeks. Other coaching stops include Air Force, Ohio, Navy and Nevada.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Michael Goldberger, Brown’s director of athletics, will retire at the end of the academic year. Overall, Goldberger has spent 38 years at the institution, starting in 1973 as an assistant football coach … California (Pennsylvania) athletic director Tom Pucci will retire at the end of the semester. Pucci served in the role for 20-plus years and in intercollegiate athletics for over 40 years. Karen Hjerpe will serve as interim athletic director … Rockhurst appointed Gary Burns as its new director of athletics. Burns, the Hawks’ head baseball coach since 1994, will continue to lead the squad … Western Carolina named Randy Eaton director of athletics. Eaton comes from Maryland, where he was senior associate director of athletics since 2008.

Coaches

Football – Arkansas State hired Gus Malzahn as its new head football coach. Malzahn was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Auburn the past three seasons … Howard Payne promoted assistant head football coach Roger Geise to head football coach. Geise joined the coaching staff in 2005 and has over 35 years of coaching experience overall … South Carolina and head football coach Steve Spurrier agreed to a two-year contract extension, keeping him with the Gamecocks through 2015.

Football assistants – Illinois interim head coach and defensive coordinator Vic Koenning has decided to pursue other opportunities after the squad’s upcoming bowl game. Additionally, defensive line coach Keith Gilmore will be retained on the new coaching staff.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Rutgers extended the contract of head women’s lacrosse coach Laura Brand-Sias through the 2015 season. Brand-Sias is entering her 10th season at the helm.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Ike Onyeador resigned his position as Barton’s head women’s soccer coach after two years at the helm, one in an interim capacity.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – New Jersey City announced the resignation of head men’s volleyball coach Carlo Edra to pursue career interests outside of intercollegiate athletic.

Staff

Facilities – Macalester hired Brittany Feser as the Leonard Center manager.

Conferences

The Atlantic Coast Conference named Brad Hostetter associate commissioner for compliance and governance. Hostetter spent the past 11 years working at the NCAA national office.

NCAA Committee Vacancies

The NCAA is soliciting nominations for the following committee vacancies. The deadline for submitting nomination materials is January 20, 2012. Nominations must be submitted online (access code: membership 2 – password: service).

Division II Track and Field Committee – One immediate vacancy. The appointee will replace Jamie Moreno, Florida Southern, who resigned from the committee. The appointee must be from the South region and may be a coach or administrator.

Division II Women’s Volleyball Committee – One January 2012 vacancy. The appointee will replace Taylor Mott, Flagler, who resigned from the committee. The appointee must be from the Southeast region and may be a coach or administrator.
