Weber State named John L. Smith head football coach. Smith, a Weber State alum, has been a head coach at Idaho, Utah State, Louisville and Michigan State. He was most recently the special teams coach at Arkansas and has 40 years of coaching experience altogether.

Other transactions

Associate athletics directors – Albany (New York) hired Patrick Hairston as associate director of athletics for NCAA compliance. Hairston was previously an assistant AD at West Virginia.

Coaches

Football – Old Dominion signed head football coach Bobby Wilder to a new 10-year contract that will keep him with the program through 2021. Wilder was hired in 2007 when the Monarchs began their football program.

Football assistants – Arkansas defensive coordinator/secondary coach Willy Robinson resigned. Robinson just completed his fourth season in the role … Illinois offensive coordinator Paul Petrino resigned to become offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under his brother, Bobby, at Arkansas. Quarterbacks coach Jeff Brohm will take over for the Illini’s bowl game.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Appalachian State named Matt Nelson head men’s soccer coach. Nelson served as the acting head coach for the Mountaineers this past season.
