Champion magazine recognized for excellence

NCAA Champion continues to establish itself as one of the nation’s top trade publications, winning six more awards in the 2011 contest conducted annually by Trade Association and Business Publications International.

Champion, which also won five “Tabbie” awards in both 2009 and 2010, was one of just seven publications (of more than 400 entered from around the globe) to win as many as four awards. Champion in fact is one of only two publications to win that many in each of the last three years. The other is Exhibitor Magazine.

Champion’s awards for 2011 included a silver, a bronze, three honorable mentions and recognition for one of the top feature stories in the competition.

Two of the awards honored NCAA Photos’ Jamie Schwaberow. One was for his cover photo of Tennessee rower Rachel Dooley (Spring 2010 issue), for which Schwaberow was one of only three honorable mentions, and the other was for his collaboration with Champion Art Director Arnel Reynon for the cover shot of Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin (Fall 2010 issue), which earned a Silver award in the front cover/imagery category.

Champion Executive Editor David Pickle earned a Bronze in the regular column category. The columns earning the recognition were a tribute to longtime NCAA staff member Lydia Sanchez in the Summer 2010 issue and a profile of Griffin as a model for success in the Fall 2010 edition.

Pickle also earned a seventh-place award in the features category with his comprehensive look at how the NCAA distributes its annual revenues (“Eye on the Money” in the Spring 2010 issue).

Designer Channon Seifert was recognized with an honorable mention (one of only two named) in the opening spread category with his work on the 20th anniversary of the Women’s College World Series being held in Oklahoma City.

Jack Copeland also was recognized with the lone honorable mention in the single news article category with his story on a special program at Lesley University (“Waiver meets a special need” in the Winter 2010 issue).

Champion is the NCAA’s official quarterly publication distributed to NCAA member institutions and other constituents.
