Beloit to add men’s and women’s lacrosse

Beloit is adding men’s and women’s lacrosse as varsity sports beginning with the 2013 spring season. The additions bring Beloit’s varsity offerings to 11 men’s and 10 women’s sports.

A search will be beginning soon for the teams’ first head coaches. Beloit will be the first member of the Midwest Conference to sponsor lacrosse at the varsity level.

The school also is beginning a $3.7 million project to install turf on its football field and refurbish the surrounding track. Beloit has not hosted a home track and field meet since 1997.

The track and field redevelopment, as well as the lacrosse programs, are being funded by gifts from alumni, friends and parents of Beloit students.

In a letter to the Beloit campus community, President Scott Bierman said he also wants to see the college revive the Beloit Relays, once one of the nation’s premier collegiate track and field events. Begun in 1937, the Relays were last run in 1979.

The college expects to dedicate the new track and field at its football home opener this fall.
