    Maryland hired Kevin Anderson as its new director of athletics. Anderson, the director of athletics at Army since 2004, is credited with turning the athletic department's operating deficit into a $2.73 million surplus during his tenure. He succeeds Deborah A. Yow, who accepted the director of athletics position at North Carolina State this summer.

    Coaches

    Baseball assistants – Duke hired Edwin Thompson as an assistant coach after two seasons as the head coach at Bates. Thompson will be responsible for recruiting and serve as the outfield coach.

    Women's basketball assistants – WPI named Corey Boilard assistant coach after four years as a coach at the high school level. Boilard also has coaching experience with the men's basketball programs at Keane State and Plymouth State. She was a volunteer with the Plymouth State women's basketball program in 2009.

    Men's and women's soccer assistants – Olivet selected Jen Leone as assistant coach of the women's soccer program. Olivet most recently worked as a teacher and soccer coach at the high school level.

    Softball assistants – Loyola (Illinois) named Brittany Pascale assistant softball coach. Pascale was a four-year softball student athlete at Nebraska who graduated in 2009.

    Staff

    Athletic training – Amanda Cox joined the Olivet staff as an assistant athletic trainer. Cox has previous experience as an athletic trainer at Gettysburg, Auburn and Lock Haven.

    Deaths

    Colorado skiing student-athlete Spencer Nelson died in a hiking accident on August 4 at the age of 20. As a freshman last season, Nelson earned a 21st-place finish in the giant slalom and 23rd in the slalom at the NCAA championships to help guide the Buffaloes to a second-place finish in the team standings.
