    Former Boston U. director of athletics John B. Simpson died August 31 at the age of 85. Simpson served as AD from 1975 to 1984 and moved into the development and alumni relations offices until his retirement in 1992. During Simpson's tenure, Boston U. created 10 women's varsity programs and became the first eastern school to offer athletics scholarships for women. Two of the head coaches Simpson hired, Carl Adams (wrestling) and Sally Starr (field hockey) are entering their 30th seasons at the university.

    Other transactions

    Assistant directors of athletics – Manhattan promoted Stephen Dombroski to assistant athletics director for communication and marketing. Dombroski has worked as the college's sports information director since 2008.

    Coaches

    Women's basketball assistants – Randolph-Macon selected CK Calhoun as assistant coach after two seasons as an assistant coach on the women's basketball team at her alma mater Marymount.

    Men's and women's cross country and track and field – Peter Julian was promoted to head coach of the men's and women's cross country programs at Washington State. Julian is entering his second season with the cross country program and also coaching the distance runners on the men's and women's track and field teams.

    Football – Iowa extended head coach Kirk Ferentz's contract through the 2020 season. Ferentz, a three-time Big Ten Coach of Year, is entering his 12th season.

    Softball assistants – Towson hired Laura Streets as an assistant coach after two years as an assistant coach at Delaware State.

    Conferences

    The America East Conference hired Shonna Brown as associate commissioner. Brown worked as an assistant director of championships at the NCAA national office the past three years … The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference promoted Greg McKeever to assistant director after three years of service as the league's publicist.
