    Former Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Joe Kearney died May 5 after an eight-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Kearney was instrumental in building the conference's first national broadcast deal with ESPN and oversaw the merger with the women's High Country Athletic Conference and conference expansion. He was heavily involved in national governance, serving on and chairing several NCAA committees, including the Executive Committee. Kearney was 83.

    Men's basketball – Rutgers hired Mike Rice, who led Robert Morris to three consecutive postseason appearances and a 73-31 record. Rice's contract is good through the 2014-15 season … Connecticut signed Jim Calhoun to a five-year contract retroactive to last season. The deal runs through 2014.

    Men's basketball assistants – DePaul selected Brian Ellerbe… Iowa named Ryan Bowen video coordinator and administrative assistant.

    Women's basketball assistants – San Francisco hired Katy Steding and Blair Hardiek … South Carolina promoted Lisa Boyer to associate head coach … Tennessee tabbed Mickie DeMoss, who formerly was with Pat Summitt's staff there until leaving for the head coaching job at Kentucky and an assistant position under Gail Goestenkors at Texas after that.
