Former Washington (Maryland) athletics director, coach and professor Edward L. Athey died February 28. Athey played basketball, soccer and baseball at Frostburg State and Washington. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to Washington for his senior year, playing quarterback for the football team. In 1948, he earned a graduate degree at Columbia, then returned to his alma mater to teach physical education and coach basketball, soccer and track. A year later he was promoted to athletics director, a position he held for 38 years. Athey was 88.

Women's basketball – Becky Geyer resigned after four seasons at Jacksonville State, effective June 30 … Kentucky Wesleyan accepted Ron Williams' resignation, effective March 31.
Men's and women's soccer – Western Carolina tabbed Chad Miller to lead its women's soccer program. Miller spent the past season as head coach at Catawba. He had been recruiting coordinator at Western Carolina and coached goalkeepers. He also coached at Pfeiffer.
Men's and women's volleyball – Eastern Illinois promoted Kate Price, who served as an assistant to Alan Segal last season. Segal resigned in January.
Deaths
Jason Bednarz, a football student-athlete at Springfield, died February 28. Bednarz, a senior, was an offensive lineman majoring in business and psychology. He was 22.
