    West Virginia named Oliver Luck director of intercollegiate athletics, effective July 1. Luck, a Mountaineers' All-American and NFL quarterback, is president and general manager of the Houston Dynamo soccer franchise in Houston. He will fill the position when Ed Pastilong retires on June 30. Pastilong will serve as athletics director emeritus through 2012.

    Other transactions

    Associate directors of athletics – Northwestern named Mike Polisky senior associate athletics director for external affairs.

    Coaches

    Men's basketball – Matt Neil was named head men's basketball coach at Hope.

    Men's and women's soccer – Anne Whiting and Olaf Kirsten were named co-coaches of the women's soccer program at Northland … Katherine Mertz has resigned her position at UNLV.

    Men's and women's volleyball – Kari Eckheart has announced her resignation as women's volleyball coach at Gustavus Adolphus in order to accept the full-time responsibilities as the assistant athletics director for student-athlete services.

    Conferences

    The Southern Conference announced that Roger Brown, chancellor at Chattanooga, has been named chair of the league's council of presidents for 2010-11.

    Staff

    Equipment managers – Kyle Martinelli has been named the head equipment manager for the Moravian athletics department.

    Sports information directors – Michael Herzberg is retiring as director of sports information at Winona State.

    Deaths

    Pamela M. Jolicoeur, president of Concordia-Moorhead, died Wednesday after suffering a stroke. She was 65 … Former Virginia State men's basketball assistant coach (1999-2003), Walter Penny died on May 20 at the age of 72.
