California women's rowing student-athlete Jill Costello died June 24 after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Costello died a month after being named Pacific-10 women's rowing athlete of the year and earning her degree in political science. Costello continued to train and compete with the Golden Bears after being diagnosed in June 2009. She served as coxswain for the varsity eight boat at the Pac-10 championships, leading the team to the conference title. Costello was 22. Presidents and chancellors – Bemidji State named Richard A. Hanson president. Hanson was interim president at North Dakota State and once led Waldorf. Athletics director – Georgia Tech extended Dan Radakovich's contract by five years, keeping him with the Yellow Jackets through 2015 … North Dakota extended the contract of Brian Faison through 2015. He has been with the school for two years. Associate athletics director – Lisa Mabry will oversee compliance at Long Beach. She spent the last three years at Cal State Northridge. Assistant athletics director – James Madison selected John Martin for its communications office. He had held a similar position at Coastal Carolina. Other transactions Coaches Men's basketball – Texas-San Antonio extended Brooks Thompson's contract through the 2014-15 season. Women's basketball – Georgia Tech extended MaChelle Joseph's contract through 2015. In eight seasons, she has a 129-86 record … Holy Cross extended Bill Gibbons' contract through the 2012-13 season. Women's basketball assistant – Patrick Klein resigned from Illinois. Men's and women's cross country – Ann Alyanak stepped down from the women's team at Dayton. Men's and women's lacrosse – Washington (Maryland) named Jeff Shirk to its men's program. He was head coach at VMI for the past four years.
