    Jimmy Collins, head coach of the men's basketball program at Illinois-Chicago, announced his retirement, effective August 31, after 14 seasons with the Flames. Collins is the winningest coach in program history with 218 victories. Before his tenure at Illinois-Chicago, Collins was an assistant coach at Illinois for 13 seasons.

    Coaches

    Baseball assistants – Matt Heath rejoined the staff at College of Charleston as an assistant coach. Heath, who was on the Cougars' staff from 2007 to 2008, spent the past year as a professional scout and was an assistant coach at Auburn in 2009.

    Women's basketball assistants – North Carolina-Greensboro hired former student-athlete ChoRhonda Gwaltney as an assistant coach. Gwaltney was a member of the Spartans from 1997 to 2001 and was an assistant coach at Campbell the past two seasons.

    Football assistants – Josh Gehring was named pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater.

    Men's and women's soccer assistants – LSU hired College of Charleston women's head coach Kevin Dempsey as an assistant coach for its women's program. Dempsey replaces Daniel Brizard, who was named head coach of the women's soccer team at Tennessee Tech … Minos Vlamakis, a volunteer coach for the Illinois-Chicago men's soccer program since 2007, was promoted to full-time assistant coach.

    Staff

    Business – College of Charleston hired Annette Medalie as business manager. Medalie was a graduate assistant at Florida Atlantic, where she earned her degree in business administration.

    Community relations – Phillip Greene was named community relations manager for athletics at Lees-McRae. Greene was most recently a sports editor for a local newspaper in North Carolina.

    Conferences

    The Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference is changing its name slightly with the word "College" being changed to "Collegiate."  The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference consists of Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts Maritime, Salem State, Westfield State and Worcester State.

    Deaths

    Mickey McCarty, 63, a multisport standout at TCU who was drafted to play pro football, baseball and basketball in 1968, died Wednesday after a nine-month struggle with pancreatic cancer.
