    Southern California named former Trojans quarterback Pat Haden as athletics director to replace Mike Garrett, who stepped down after 17 years in the position. Haden is currently an analyst for Notre Dame football games on NBC. A Rhodes Scholar, he quarterbacked the Trojans to three Rose Bowls before playing for the NFL's Los Angeles Rams from 1976 to 1981. Haden will resign from the USC Board of Trustees to accept the appointment and will report directly to the president's office. He will also be appointed to the faculty of the school's business and communications schools.

    Other transactions

    Associate directors of athletics – Nate Wainwright joined the Lehman staff as associate director of athletics after 10 years in administrative services with the NFL.

    Coaches

    Baseball – Central Michigan extended the contract of head coach Steve Jaksa through 2014. Jaksa has led the Chippewas since 2003 and won the Mid-American Conference championship last season.

    Men's and women's cross country and track and field – Alverno named Maria Stuber head coach of the women's cross country program after her time as a cross country student-athlete and coach at Northern Michigan … Trent Mack was named head coach of the men's and women's cross country programs at Ashland. Mack was previously the men's and women's cross country and track and field head coach at NAIA member Dakota State.

    Men's and women's cross country and track and field assistants – California hired Will Thomas as an assistant men's and women's track and field coach. Thomas began his career at California as a volunteer coach before spending four years at Harvard and Dartmouth.

    Men's and women's golf – Charlie Auletto was named head coach of the men's golf program at New Jersey City. The program will begin its first season of competition this fall. Auletto will also continue to serve as an assistant coach with the baseball team.

    Men's and women's tennis – Fordham men's tennis coach Bob Hawthorn resigned after 54 years with the university. Hawthorn, the longest-tenured coach in school history, began his career in 1956 as coach of the men's squash program and was hired as the head coach of men's tennis in 1958. As a two-sport student-athlete in tennis and squash Hawkins graduated from Fordham in 1953 and earned a graduate degree in 1960.

    Staff

    Compliance – Southern California named David M. Roberts as vice president for athletics compliance and promoted Ellen Ferris, formerly the associate provost for athletics compliance, to associate vice president for athletics compliance.

    Deaths

    Julia DeFelice, a soccer student-athlete at Wesley, died July 16 when she was struck by a vehicle. The Tinton Falls, New Jersey, native finished her junior season with the Wolverines tied for 16th all-time at Wesley in goals, 17th in assists and 18th in points. Wesley will establish a memorial fund to honor DeFelice.
