    Mike Herbert announced his retirement as head coach of the women's volleyball program at Minnesota after 15 years. Herbert previously led the women's volleyball program at Illinois for 13 years and has also coached at New Mexico and Pittsburgh. He is one of only four Division I women's volleyball coaches to lead two different programs to multiple national semifinal appearances, and the only one to lead two programs from the same conference to the finals. Herbert's Minnesota squad reached the finals three times and his Illini program reached the finals twice. 

    Other transactions

    Directors of athletics – Antoine Bell was named interim athletics director at Alabama-Huntsville following the death of athletics director Jim Harris. Bell has been on staff in the department since 1998, most recently serving as associate director of athletics for media relations.

    Coaches

    Football – Nichols head coach Bill Carven announced his resignation, effective immediately. Carven has guided the program for 12 years … Bruce Fowler was named head coach at Furman. Fowler spent the last nine seasons as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Vanderbilt … Prairie View A&M promoted defensive coordinator Heishma Northern to head coach following the resignation of Henry Frazier III. Northern has led the program's defense the past six seasons.

    Deaths

    Saint Anthony Crawford IV, assistant athletics director for athletics advancement at Kent State, died December 10. Crawford joined the Kent State staff in August 2009 and previously worked in development at Fordham … Scott Lang, head coach of the men's basketball program at La Roche, died on December 10. Lang has been with the program for 18 seasons and has served as head coach the past 14 seasons … Keith "Doc" Ochs, former director of athletics at Lenoir-Rhyne, died December 6. Ochs guided the Bears from 1983 to 1996 and played an integral role in the school's transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II.
