    Alabama-Huntsville director of athletics Jim Harris died December 11 after suffering a heart attack. Harris, 63, led the department since 1995 and was previously an administrator at Utah State and Rice.

    Other transactions

    Director of athletics – Savannah State named Marilynn Stacey-Suggs director of intercollegiate athletics, effective January 1, 2011. Suggs has served in the role on an interim basis since January 2010.

    Coaches

    Men's basketball assistants – Joan Sanchez was hired as an assistant coach with the men's basketball program at Felician. Sanchez served as head coach of the men's basketball program at Concordia (New York) last season.

    Football – Miami (Florida) named Al Golden head coach. Golden has served as head coach at Temple the past five seasons … Jesse Burleson was promoted to head coach at Hardin-Simmons after five seasons as the offensive line coach. Burleson assumes the role vacated by Jimmie Keeling, who retired in November after 21 years at the helm … Northern Arizona extended the contract of head coach Jerome Souers through 2013. Souers has served as head coach of the program since 1998 … Will Muschamp was named head coach at Florida following the resignation of head coach Urban Meyer. Muschamp was the defensive coordinator at Texas the past three seasons … Louisiana-Lafayette hired Mississippi State assistant coach Mark Hudspeth as the program's new head coach.

    Men's and women's soccer – Tim Vom Steeg, head coach of the men's soccer program at UC Santa Barbara, was awarded a new contract. Vom Steeg has guided the program for the past 12 years.

    Deaths

    Amy Cayemberg, a former Wisconsin-Oshkosh student-athlete, died December 6 of injuries sustained in a car accident. Cayemberg, 40, competed in volleyball and track and field and still ranks first in WIAC history with 2,292 career kills and second with a .387 career hitting percentage … Kyle Conrad, a soccer student-athlete at Lynn, died December 11. Conrad competed for the Fighting Knights for four seasons and was scheduled to graduate in May.
