    Illinois head women's gymnastics coach Bob Starkell resigned. Starkell has served on the women's staff for 17 years, including the last 11 as head coach. He also served as director of gymnastics during the 2009-10 academic year, overseeing the men's and women's gymnastics programs. Kim Landrus, associate head coach of the women's program the last four seasons, was named interim head coach of the team for the 2010-11 season.

    Other transactions

    Presidents – Wallace D. Loh was appointed president at Maryland, effective November 1. Loh is currently the executive vice president and provost at Iowa.

    Coaches

    Baseball – Mike Ashman, head coach at Cal Poly Pomona for the past 15 seasons, announced his retirement, effective October 1.

    Men's basketball assistants – Massachusetts-Lowell promoted assistant coach Marc Kuntz to associate head coach. Kuntz joined the program in 2005.

    Women's basketball assistants – Lamar added Sunny Vadopalaite and Ashley Crawford to the program's staff. Vadopalaite was an assistant coach with the women's basketball program at Kean last seasons and will serve as the director of basketball operations. Crawford recently completed her career as a student-athlete at Lamar and will serve as an assistant coach … Sage selected Bruce Perry as assistant coach after serving as an associate coach at Cobleskill State the past seven seasons.

    Men's and women's cross country and track and field -- Bruce Bickford was hired as head coach of the men's and women's cross country teams at St. Joseph's (Maine). Bickford spent the past three seasons as a head coach at the high school level.

    Men's and women's track and field assistants – Oregon hired Jamie Cook as assistant coach of the men's and women's track and field events. Cook, an assistant coach at Pennsylvania since 2001, will oversee the combined events, the men's and women's hurdles, and the men's high jump and pole vault … Judy Bataille joined Mount Union as an assistant coach for the women's track and field and cross country programs. Bataille just completed her career as a student-athlete at Heidelberg, where she was a two-time NCAA Division III indoor track national champion in the 55-meter dash.

    Staff

    Athletic training – St. Joseph's (Maine) hired Neil Carroll as head athletic trainer.

    Deaths

    Jospin "Andre" Milandu, a student at North Carolina A&T, died August 19, after collapsing at tryouts for the men's track and field program … Wichita State baseball student-athlete Mitch Caster died August 23 in a car accident. Caster was set to enter his senior year as a pitcher and outfielder with the Shockers and recently competed in a summer baseball league in Rochester, Minnesota.
