    Georgia appointed Greg McGarity director of athletics. McGarity is a Georgia alumnus who worked in the athletics department as a sports information director, women's tennis coach and administrator before leaving Georgia in 1992. He spent the past 18 years at Florida, rising to senior associate athletics director. McGarity replaces Damon Evans, who resigned last month.

    Other transactions

    Presidents and chancellors – Brandeis selected Frederick M. Lawrence, dean of the George Washington University Law School, as president.

    Associate directors of athletics – SMU named Kristopher Lowe as associate athletics director for business. The school also promoted Brad Sutton to associate athletics director for public relations and marketing … San Jose State promoted Matt Witty, assistant director of ticket operations since 2005,to associate athletics director for business operations. The school also promoted Jody Smith to associate athletics director for events and facilities … NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program graduate Kiki Jacobs has been named associate director of athletics at Springfield. She was previously an associate director of athletics at Oberlin.

    Assistant directors of athletics – SMU named Dave Wollman assistant athletics director of student-athlete development/university liaison. Wollman will continue to serve as head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs. SMU also promoted Kris Harris to assistant athletics director of facilities and operations. Harris was previously the director of turf management … Michael Beaubien was promoted from director of marketing and ticket sales to assistant athletics director of marketing and promotions at San Jose State. Eric Howitt also was promoted to director of equipment services, branding and licensing … Fort Lewis named Chris Aaland as assistant director of athletics for external operations and communications. Aaland has been the college's director of alumni relations since 2006 … Akron selected Rob Heuer as assistant athletics director for compliance after three years at Colorado as athletics rules education coordinator.

    Coaches

    Baseball – Carl Iwasaki accepted the head coach position at Northern Colorado. Iwasaki was head coach at Austin the past five seasons … Southern California elevated assistant coach Frank Cruz to interim head coach after head coach Chad Kreuter was relieved of his duties.

    Baseball assistants – Mark Thomchick, former Washington & Jefferson baseball student-athlete, was named an assistant coach.

    Men's basketball assistants – Lynn hired James Altman as an assistant coach. Altman was a video coordinator at Oklahoma State the past two seasons … Brandon Chaison, a teacher and basketball coach at the youth level, was named assistant coach at Chowan.

    Women's basketball – Tanya Bauer, assistant coach of the women's basketball program at Southern Illinois, was named head coach at Slippery Rock … Cal State Chico named Brian Fogel head coach after two seasons as interim head coach … Maryville (Tennessee) elevated Darrin Travillian to interim head coach after two seasons as an assistant coach with the program … Robert Morris extended the contract of head coach Sal Buscaglia through May 2016. Buscaglia is entering her eighth season as head coach of the program.

    Women's basketball assistants – Washington & Jefferson selected Emily Hays as an assistant coach. Hays was also named head coach of the women's tennis program … Slippery Rock named Jeff Crouse assistant coach. Crouse was an assistant coach with the women's basketball program at Idaho … Shaw hired Anita Griffin as an assistant coach.

    Men's and women's cross country and track and field assistants – Wisconsin-Parkside selected Micah VanDenend as head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs. VanDenend was a record setting student-athlete at Iowa, where he most recently served as director of track and field operations.

    Men's and women's cross country and track and field assistants – UC Davis hired Kimberly Graham-Miller as an assistant coach for the women's indoor and men's and women's outdoor track and field programs. Graham-Miller, an Olympic gold medalist, previously coached at Duke and Virginia … Saint Augustine's selected former student-athlete Marquita Davis as an assistant men's and women's track and field coach.

    Field hockey – Cedar Crest selected Cindy Joseph as head coach of the field hockey program. Joseph, who was an interim field hockey head coach and lacrosse head coach at Arcadia, will also coach the women's lacrosse program … Julie Zoolkoski was appointed head coach at Slippery Rock after serving in the same role at American International.

    Field hockey assistants -- Domineque Scott was appointed assistant field hockey coach at Washington & Jefferson.

    Football – Rose-Hulman elevated Jayson Martin to interim head coach after three seasons as the program's offensive coordinator. Martin takes over for the program after the departure of Steve Englehart, who accepted the offensive coordinator position at Indiana State.

    Football assistants – Shaefrey Griffin and Steve Spence were hired as assistant football coaches at Washington & Jefferson … Jasno Makrinos, former assistant at Carnegie Mellon, was named as assistant coach at Slippery Rock … Former student-athlete David Boler returned to Delaware as an assistant coach. Boler previously coached at the high school and junior college levels.

    Men's and women's lacrosse – Cindy Joseph was named head coach of the women's lacrosse program at Cedar Crest. Joseph will also coach the field hockey program after serving as women's lacrosse head coach and interim field hockey head coach at Arcadia.

    Men's and women's lacrosse assistants – Washington & Jefferson named Katelyn Deese assistant coach of the women's lacrosse program and Daniel Holoubek as assistant coach of the men's lacrosse program.

    Men's and women's soccer – Cedar Crest named Nicole Pietrobon head coach of the women's soccer program. Pietrobon was a soccer student-athlete at DeSales and served as an assistant coach after graduating in January 2010 … Slippery Rock hired former Wright State men's soccer assistant Michael Bonelli as head coach of the men's soccer program … Felicia Amaral was selected as head coach of the women's soccer program at Mount St. Vincent. Amaral, a former soccer student-athlete at Long Island, will also serve as an assistant athletic trainer … Bellarmine appointed Jonathan Velotta head coach of the women's soccer program. Velotta was an assistant coach for both the men's and women's soccer programs at Bellarmine the past four seasons.

    Softball – Lake Superior State named Lori Shimasaki head coach after a season as an assistant coach at Chadron State.

    Softball assistants – Amy Marinacci was named assistant softball coach at Washington & Jefferson.

    Men's and women's swimming and diving – Colgate selected Fernando Canales as head coach of the men's and women's swimming and diving programs. Canales is currently the development officer for athletics at Michigan. He served as an assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams from 1982 to 1987 and again from 2006 to 2008.

    Men's and women's tennis – Emily Hays was hired as head coach of the women's tennis program at Washington & Jefferson. Hays will also serve as an assistant women's basketball coach … Castleton selected Rob Purdy as head coach of the women's tennis program, succeeding Paul Cohen, who resigned.

    Men's and women's volleyball – Staten Island named former student-athlete and current assistant coach Melissa Quiles interim head coach of the women's volleyball program. Quiles was a member of the Dolphins' volleyball and softball teams from 2001 to 2005. In addition to coaching the volleyball program, she will also continue serving as assistant coach for the softball program.

    Men's and women's volleyball – Brandon Duvall was promoted to interim head coach of the women's volleyball program. An assistant coach with the Spartans the past two seasons, Duvall takes over for head coach Jennifer Fry, who accepted a women's volleyball assistant coach position at Washington State.

    Men's and women's volleyball assistants – Washington & Jefferson named Kim Jarzynka assistant coach of the women's volleyball program.

    Staff

    Athletic training – Carlitta Moore was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Saint Augustine's … St. Mary's (Maryland) hired Dena Bissell and Stephanie Guzzo as assistant athletic trainers.

    Compliance – Loyola Maryland named Kristen Gillis compliance coordinator. Gillis was previously a compliance graduate assistant at James Madison.

    Sports information – Randy Lieberman was selected as assistant sports information director at Washington & Jefferson.

    Sports medicine – DePaul hired Anthony Aldridge as assistant director of sports medicine. Aldridge was most recently an athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coordinator in the NBA Development League.

    Strength and conditioning – Jimmy Duba was named assistant director of strength and conditioning at DePaul. Duba was a strength and conditioning coach in the NBA and WNBA since 2008.

    Turf management – Russell Coe was promoted to director of turf management at SMU.

    Conferences

    The Southeastern Conference named Sally Bell coordinator of women's basketball officials. Bell began officiating NCAA Division I and II games in 1981 and has officiated in 15 Women's Final Fours including 13 straight from 1993 to 2005 … The Southland Conference hired Shannon Sieg as the communications/media services intern for the 2010-11 academic year. Sieg was a communications assistant at the Summit League last academic year.

    Deaths

    Former Florida Tech men's golf student-athlete Byron Thompson died in a car accident August 7. Thompson graduated this year with a bachelor's degree in mathematics education.

    Corrections

    A recap of the 2010 Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the summer edition of the NCAA's Champion magazine incorrectly asserted that team champion North Central (Illinois) did not win any individual events on its way to the title. In fact, North Central's Kyle Brady won the 10,000 meters and Jake Winder was the champion in the pole vault.
