Monarchs end 10-year drought in men's golf

Josh Schrader's four-foot putt on the final hole gave Methodist its 10th national title in Division III men's golf Friday at the Hershey Links in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The Monarchs took control of the four-day tournament by catapulting from 12th to first place at the end of the second round. Guilford came within a stroke in the final round before Schrader made his title-saving putt.

The Monarchs had won nine of 10 national crowns from 1990 through 1999 but went through a 10-year drought before winning the school's 10th championship.

"That was way too nerve-wracking," Methodist coach Steve Conley said. "It's been since 1999 that we won. All the guys in between have wanted that number 10 for so long."

In the individual competition, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Tain Lee ended the tournament in the same place where he started – atop the leader board. Lee finished with an overall score of 280 (7 under par) and became the first male golfer from the southern California school to win a national championship. Mitchell Fedorka of La Verne pulled within a stroke on the 12th hole but fell back later in the round. [More]
