St. Andrews Presbyterian College announced July 22 that it is suspending its women's volleyball program for this season because head coach Thais Franca resigned to care for her ailing father in Brazil.

In a statement on the school's website, Athletics Director Glenn Batten said, "Though I regret the circumstances of her resignation, I respect her decision to put her family's needs before her own."

Bratten said because the resignation occurred so close to the beginning of preseason, the college had little choice but to suspend competition for the upcoming year.

"We are going to spend the next few months searching for a coach who can rebuild our volleyball program," he said. "We need someone who not only understands the game but who also can recruit the kind of student-athlete who will be successful on the court and in the classroom."

The school's volleyball program averaged 13.4 win per season over the last decade and had a .500 or better record in five of the last 10 seasons. St. Andrews Presbyterian is a member of Conference Carolinas.
