    Philadelphia U. coach Magee passes Knight in wins

    Philadelphia University head men's basketball coach Herb Magee passed Bob Knight in all-time wins Tuesday as his Rams earned a 76-65 victory over Goldey-Beacom at the Gallagher Athletic Center on Herb Magee Court in front of a sell-out crowd. 

    Magee is 903-352 in 43 seasons as the head coach at Philadelphia.  

    Knight compiled a 902-371 record during 42 seasons at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech. Northern State men's coach Don Meyer, who announced earlier this week that he is retiring at the end of this season, has won 922 games at both NCAA and NAIA programs. Magee is only men's coach to have won more NCAA games than Knight and former North Carolina coach Dean Smith (879).

    "If someone mentions my name along with those guys, that makes me proud that I won more games than those guys," Magee told the Philadelphia Inquirer after reaching the milestone. "I always tell people, though, that Dean Smith did it in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Bobby Knight did it in the Big Ten and the Big 12."

    Otherwise, Magee downplayed the personal achievement and instead hyped what the win meant to his team.

    "The players will tell you that we don't talk about (the milestone)," he said. "That was a game where the other team had beaten us earlier in the year. That was for first place in the conference. We will now get a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament coming up Monday. . . . So that's what (this game) means."

    Rams point guard Russell Frederick led the way against Goldey-Beacom with 24 points, seven assists and four blocks. The Rams (23-6 overall and 15-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) scored the first 14 points and led for the entire game.

    Goldey-Beacom got as close as 66-59 in the final minutes, but Marcus Lemon shut the door with his second three of the night and the Ram fans stormed the court to celebrate with Magee.

    The Rams play their final regular-season game this on Saturday against Nyack College.
