    The NCAA News

    Molly Corbett Broad, president
    American Council on Education:

"In selecting a successor for the late Myles Brand, who was a remarkable executive, the NCAA has made a terrific choice. Mark is a smart, strategic leader with a wealth of experience in athletics who has made higher education the focus of his life's work. He is tremendously impressive, and I look forward to working with him in his new capacity as president of the NCAA."

    Michael F. Adams, president
    University of Georgia:

"I have known Dr. Emmert for most of our careers. He is a very capable and effective president and will perform likewise in his new role at the NCAA. I congratulate him and wish him well."

    James Barker, president, Clemson University
Chair of the Division I Board of Directors:

"I think the quality of the choice had something to do with the quality of the candidates. We had excellent candidates, and we were able to choose the finalist among an excellent pool. I'm excited about what the future holds for the NCAA. We have an experienced leader coming in with some fresh ideas, and that's the best combination you could ask for."

    James Harris, president, Widener University
Chair of the Division III Presidents Council:
"I think he's an outstanding leader, and he's demonstrated the capacity to take on complex issues. We couldn't have made a better choice than Mark. He's fantastic."

Harvey Perlman, chancellor, University of Nebraska, Lincoln
Incoming chair of the Division I Board of Directors:
"We were very fortunate to have some extraordinarily good candidates. We have a lot of confidence in Mark as the right leader of the NCAA and we look forward to working with him."

    Jim Isch, interim NCAA president:
"I think Mark is an excellent choice. I had the pleasure of working with him at Montana State. He's an amazing guy, and he'll be a great face for the NCAA. I see a lot of similarities with Myles (Brand). He's a very bright man who is committed to the values of higher education, which certainly was one of Myles' strengths. I think you're going to see a lot of similarities."

Jim Haney, executive director National Association of Basketball Coaches:
"We wish him well and look forward to working with him on men's basketball and issues relating to APR and other matters. We all benefit if he does well."

William E. Kirwan and R. Gerald Turner, co-chairs
Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics:
"We would like to extend our congratulations to Mark Emmert on being named NCAA president. We look forward to working with President Emmert to promote our shared visions that college sports programs can and should operate in ways that strengthen the educational missions of our universities. We encourage President Emmert to put financial reform on the top of his agenda and believe the Knight Commission's upcoming report will provide helpful reform ideas."

    James Delany, commissioner
    Big Ten Conference:
"I think it's an exciting opportunity for him. He brings a great deal of experience having led two great American universities and complex institutions at LSU and also the University of Washington. Certainly he knows the SEC well and the Pac-10 well not only from an educational perspective but also from the athletics perspective. He's had on the ground up close and personal contacts with intercollegiate athletics and all of its positives and all of its challenges."

    Michael Crow, president
Arizona State University and chair of the Pacific-10 Conference:
"I have known Mark for a long time. He is a great academic leader who will bring new ideas and tremendous energy to the role of president at the NCAA. On behalf of my colleagues in the Pac-10, I would like to congratulate Mark on his new position."

    Larry Scott, commissioner
    Pacific-10 Conference:
"Mark is a visionary leader and a great choice as next president of the NCAA at such an important time in the Association's history. He has a deep appreciation for the welfare of student-athletes and the role athletics plays in the higher education mission."

    Beverley Pitts, president
    University of Indianapolis:
"He's an extraordinary man with great experience in higher education and intercollegiate athletics. Being at a Division I school, my feeling was that having someone who has experience at that level, which plays such a major role in what the NCAA is doing, was an advantage. His knowledge, enthusiasm and experience came through in the interview process."

    Ann Millner, president
    Weber State University:
"He has the depth of experience and has been across the nation at multiple institutions in many regions around the country. He has a deep understanding of intercollegiate athletics at the campus level and at the national level. That made him uniquely suited to have the leadership skills it takes to be the president of the NCAA."

    John Swofford, commissioner
    Atlantic Coast Conference:
"It is clear that the NCAA's search has reached a fruitful conclusion. Dr. Emmert's experience as both a CEO and faculty member at outstanding academic institutions with strong intercollegiate athletic programs will undoubtedly serve all of us well in his new post at the NCAA."

    Mike Slive, commissioner
    Southeastern Conference:
"President Emmert is an outstanding choice to be the NCAA successor to Dr. Myles Brand. I've had the pleasure of working with him while he was the chancellor at LSU. He played a leadership role in the administration of the conference and at all times he was committed to the welfare of student-athletes and the values of intercollegiate athletics within the mission of higher education. His intellect, energy, experience, passion and commitment will serve us all well. Simply put, President Ray and the Executive Committee have made a terrific choice."

    Dan Bebee, commissioner
    Big 12 Conference:
"I've had limited amount of dealing with him on issues. We both served on the NCAA Football Academic Working Group together. I give a lot of credit to the search committee because his name never emerged from any reports that I had seen. They kept it confidential which is always a challenge in searches that are this high profile. (Nebraska Chancellor) Harvey Perlman was intimately involved on the search committee, and he is on the board of directors in the Big 12. I had extreme confidence in him to work through this process. I'm sure they hired a person that will be a great leader for all of us."

Alan Hauser, FAR at Appalachian State
Current president of the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association:
"Like his predecessor Myles Brand, Mark Emmert has a solid track record of accomplishments in the academic community, as well as a long-standing engagement in intercollegiate athletics. He has been president on several campuses that have a rich athletics heritage, so he has a deep knowledge of the key issues involved in running a successful and responsible athletics program. This will coordinate nicely with his commitment to the academic well-being of all student athletes. FARA looks forward to working with President Emmert as he continues Myles Brand's legacy of academic reform, and shares President Emmert's vision of academic integrity and student-athlete achievement."
