    NCAA president position description

    Parker Executive Search, working in conjunction with the NCAA Executive Committee, has compiled a position description to help solicit nominations for the NCAA president. The position description includes attributes the successful candidate is expected to portray and outcome-oriented goals he or she should strive to accomplish. 

    Parker Executive Search compiled these in part based on membership and constituent feedback gleaned over the past several months. The solicitation asks for submissions by March 10. 


    Position description:

    The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is conducting a nationwide search for President. 

    The National Collegiate Athletic Association The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a voluntary organization through which the nation's colleges and universities govern their athletics programs. It is comprised of institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals committed to the best interests, education, and athletics participation of student-athletes. 

    More than 400,000 student-athletes participate in intercollegiate athletics and more than 44,000 compete in the 88 national championships conducted by the NCAA in 23 sports.

    The Mission

    Core Ideology- The NCAA's core ideology consists of two notions: core purpose - the organization's reason for being - and core values - essential and enduring principles that guide an organization.

    Core Purpose- Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount.

    Core Values- The Association - through its member institutions, conferences and national office staff - shares a belief in and commitment to:

    • The collegiate model of athletics in which students participate as an avocation, balancing their academic, social and athletics experiences.
    • The highest levels of integrity and sportsmanship.
    • The pursuit of excellence in both academics and athletics.
    • The supporting role that intercollegiate athletics plays in the higher education mission and in enhancing the sense of community and strengthening the identity of member institutions.
    • An inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and career opportunities for coaches and administrators from diverse backgrounds.
    • Respect for institutional autonomy and philosophical differences.
    • Presidential leadership of intercollegiate athletics at the campus, conference and national levels.

    • Athletics as Integral to Higher Education

    Student athletes will be better educated and prepared for increased and life-long achievement and success through commitment to academic reform efforts, continually improved graduation rates, and enhanced integration of the higher education experience.

    • The Student-Athlete Experience

    The collegiate athletics experience will be enriched through fair and reasonable standards, a commitment to sportsmanship, student-athlete favored application of regulations, and increased opportunities for participation.

    • Informed Governance and Decision-Making

    Member institutions and conferences will have access to data, research, and best practices that assist governance and management of intercollegiate athletics to support: President and Chancellor decision making; the sharing of best practices; increasing research initiatives on relevant issues; and encouraging membership and affiliated organization input.

    • Effective National Office Administration

    The national office will be operated in an accountable, effective and efficient manner through increased partnerships with the membership; increased flexibility, responsiveness and efficiency of regulatory functions; increased timeliness and effectiveness of membership communication; and increased use of emerging technology.

    • Perceptions of the Association and Intercollegiate Athletics

    The public will gain a greater understanding and confidence in the integrity of intercollegiate athletics and will more readily support its values through increased awareness of and advocacy for the positive nature of college sports and by enhancing public confidence in the Association as a whole.

     

    Position Overview

    The NCAA is comprised of more than 1,200 colleges, universities, conferences, and affiliated organizations.  The directives of the membership are executed by a national office staff of approximately 500 professional employees.  The annual budget for the NCAA exceeds $650 million, 95 percent of which is redistributed to the membership through direct payment or event support and services.

    • Confirmed impeccable personal and professional integrity and history of ethical behavior.
    • A demonstrated background in higher education and a commitment to student learning.
    • A strong business acumen to include the following emphasis:  managing media partnerships, budgeting, ensuring staff productivity and efficiency, protecting current and identifying additional resources of revenue.
    • A demonstrated success emphasizing creativity, encouraging strategic planning, and promoting visionary thinking.
    • Demonstrated political instincts including a working knowledge of and established connection with governmental institutions and leaders. 
    • A demonstrated commitment to providing creative, dynamic leadership in further developing the Association's mission of maintaining intercollegiate athletics as an integral and balanced part of higher education.
    • Ability to recruit, develop, lead, and motivate a diverse and highly talented national office staff.
    • Recognized competence in strategic planning, management and evaluation of programs, and budget planning with fiscal accountability procedures.

This position offers an outstanding compensation package, commensurate with experience, background and performance.
