Art Hyland, the coordinator of men's basketball officials at the Big East Conference, has been named secretary-rules editor for the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee.

Hyland, who formerly chaired the rules committee from 2002-03, was a member of the group from 1998 through 2003 and has served as the Big East Conference coordinator of men's basketball officials for the past 26 years.

Hyland will begin his duties as secretary-rules editor in May. He will succeed Ed Bilik, the NCAA men's basketball rules interpreter since 1997. Bilik announced his retirement last year.

"Art's experience and passion for the game make him the ideal person for this essential role," said Greg Shaheen, NCAA senior vice president for basketball and business strategies.

Hyland's basketball background includes serving as the assistant coach for the Princeton men's basketball program, under the leadership of Willem Van Breda Kolff and then Pete Carril, from 1966-72. He also was the associate commissioner for football and basketball operations at the Eastern College Athletic Conference from 1972-84. Hyland also has been a practicing attorney in Hyannis, Massachusetts, since 1984.

"I look forward to working together with the rules committee and basketball community to keep our great game headed in the right direction," said Hyland.

Hyland graduated from Princeton in 1963, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team for three years. He earned his juris doctorate from the New England School of Law in 1983.
