Four DII conferences earn special recognition awards

Four Division II conferences were presented with special recognition awards for their 2009-10 conference grant reports at a recent meeting of the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

The $1,500 awards went to Conference Carolinas, the East Coast Conference, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Division II Vice President Mike Racy said that while the awards are not large, the Division II Planning and Finance Committee wanted to recognize conferences that developed initiatives that strongly support the division’s strategic plan.

“We have had excellent success within Division II,” Racy said, “and much of it has

been the result of a strong national plan that is supported on conference and institutional levels. What’s especially good about the conference grant program is that it provides the membership with an opportunity to set priorities that define them as Division II members. That’s good for the institutions, the conferences and Division II in general.”

The recognized programs were:

  • Conference Carolinas: Officials Appreciation Night
  • East Coast Conference: Experience in Community and Character retreat (joining student-athletes from different institutions as teammates)
  • Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference: Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award
  • Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference: Students of Today are Referees of Tomorrow (officiating development)
