Bowie State hired Damon Wilson as head football coach. Wilson has been with the school previously in several capacities, most notably as an all-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tight end for Bowie State in 1997 and 1998. He also was the school’s special teams and running backs coach in 2007 and the special teams coordinator from 1999-2003. Wilson, a 2000 Bowie State graduate, also has been an assistant at Prairie View A&M (2008) and at Texas Southern (2004-07).

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Current head women’s soccer coach Eric Faulconer has been tabbed as the interim AD at Armstrong Atlantic State.  He will oversee the athletics department until a successor for retiring Athletics Director Eddie Aenchbacher is hired.

Men’s basketball – Virginia Commonwealth named Shaka Smart as head men’s basketball coach … Butler extended men’s basketball coach Brad Stevens’ contract through the 2015-16 season … Hampton appointed Edward Joyner as interim head basketball coach after current coach Kevin Nickelberry resigned … Tennessee renegotiated a six-year contract for men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl … Liberty’s Ritchie McKay has announced he is stepping down from his position, effective immediately. McKay was named the seventh head men’s basketball coach in program history on March 26, 2007, and since has guided the program to a 39-28 combined record and a 19-13 mark in Big South Conference play … Georgia named Nevada’s Mark Fox as its new men’s basketball coach. Fox, who had five straight 20-win seasons at Nevada, replaces Dennis Felton, who was released in January.

Men’s basketball assistants – Canisius announced the resignation of men’s assistant basketball coach Lazare Adingono.

Women’s basketball – Philadelphia Sciences head coach Nate Ware resigned, though he will continue to assist with the cross country programs … Western New Mexico coach Quinn Tedder resigned after an 8-19 season … Hofstra signed women’s basketball coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey to a three-year contract extension through the 2013-14 season.

Women’s basketball assistants – Purdue assistant coach Jody Benner resigned … Rutgers assistant Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil resigned.

Men’s and women’s cross country – North Georgia selected Tom Williams as the new cross-country and track and field head coach … Sam Houston State track and field and cross country coach Curtis Collier will leave his post at the end of the 2009 season and step into an administrative role for the athletics department.

Football assistants – Bucknell named Mike O’Connor as an assistant football coach, Brent Thompson as offensive coordinator and Matt Lintal as offensive backs coach and passing game coordinator.

Men’s and women’s soccerMike Lynch has been hired as the new head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Nebraska Wesleyan. Lynch replaces James Beckmann, the all-time winningest coach in school men’s soccer history who stepped down in March, and Jane Hoops, who served as the head women’s coach for the past three seasons before resigning in January. Lynch had been the head men’s soccer coach at Truman from 1992-95. He had been an assistant men’s soccer coach at Air Force before that, where he was a graduate.

Reprimands

The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee reprimanded University of Iowa student-athlete Brent Metcalf for aggressively shoving his opponent after the 149-pound weight class match in the 2009 Division I Wrestling Championships. The committee said Metcalf’s inappropriate actions jeopardized the opposing student-athlete’s safety.
