Mark Johnson retired after 17 years as head wrestling coach at Illinois. He coached seven Division I individual champions and 45 all-Americans during his career, and earned his 200th dual meet victory at Illinois this year. He also coached two seasons at Oregon State before accepting the Illinois post. The Illini posted 10 top-10 team finishes at the Division I Wrestling Championships, and Johnson was the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s national coach of the year in 1995. He also was a two-time champion himself as a wrestler at Michigan during the mid-1970s.

Other transactions

Director of athleticsDavid Miller selected as athletics director at Upper Iowa after two years as AD at Nebraska-Omaha. He also has held administrative positions at Air Force, Truman, Ohio and Southern Methodist.

Coaches

Men’s basketballTony Bennett selected as head coach at Virginia after three seasons at Washington State, where he led teams to two Division I Men’s Basketball Championship appearances as well as this year’s appearance in the NIT … Jeff Price resigned after 10 seasons as head coach at Georgia Southern, where his teams compiled a 165-133 record.

FootballBo Pelini signed a new contract at Nebraska, where he is entering his second season as head coach. The contract extends into 2014.

SoccerChip Dutchik hired as women’s coach at Lynn after three years as an assistant at Missouri State. He also has been a head coach at Missouri Baptist.

Swimming and divingJason Baumann resigned as men’s and women’s diving coach at Minnesota, where volunteer coach Jim Zagaria will serve as interim diving coach. Baumann recently completed his fourth year at the school.

Women’s volleyballAllison Lawrence hired as assistant coach at Trinity (Texas). She previously assisted at La Verne as it advanced to last fall’s Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship final and also has been on the staff at Pomona-Pitzer.
