Val Belmonte resigned at Quinnipiac, where he held the title of vice president for athletics marketing and external relations and had oversight responsibility for the school’s athletics program and its business-related initiatives. He is accepting a position in the sports practice group at DHR International, an executive search firm, where he also will specialize in education and not-for-profit organizations. The former Illinois-Chicago men’s ice hockey coach also served as athletics director at Union (New York) and executive director of U.S. Figure Skating before joining Quinnipiac in 2005.

Men’s basketballScott Cherry hired as head coach at High Point after serving during the past season as an assistant at South Carolina. The former North Carolina player also has been on the staffs at Tennessee Tech, George Mason and Western Kentucky ... John A. Cooper named head coach at Tennessee State after serving as associate head coach at Auburn, where he was on the staff for five years. The former Wichita State player also has coached at Fayetteville State, South Carolina and Oregon … Billy Gillispie dismissed as head coach at Kentucky, where he compiled a 40-27 record through two seasons … Anthony Grant selected as head coach at Alabama after three seasons at Virginia Commonwealth, where he led teams to two Division I Men’s Basketball Championship appearances. He also was an assistant with Florida’s 2006 Division I championship team … Jeff Ray stepped down from a second stint as head coach at Midwestern State, where he will remain as director of men’s and women’s golf and life skills coordinator. Ray first coached basketball at the school from 1994 to 2000, then assisted at North Texas before returning as athletics director in 2001 and resuming coaching in 2003.

Women’s basketballStefano Trompeo named head coach at New York University after serving as interim head coach during the past season. He led the Violets to a Division III Women’s Basketball Championship berth.

Football assistantsEugene Crosby, Benyard Jones and Michael Zordich joined the staff at Youngstown State. Crosby’s duties will include video coordination and scouting as well as work with the offensive unit, while Jones will work with the defensive line and Zordich will coach safeties.

Soccer assistant Rhonda Brooks named women’s assistant at Tennessee Tech.

Track and field/cross countryMatt vanLierop appointed head men’s and women’s coach at Mount Olive after four years as head coach at Keystone. Interim head coach Charone White will remain at Mount Olive as an assistant.

Assistant athletic trainerChris Litt named at Arkansas … Upton Dabney appointed at Tennessee Tech.
