American named Howard Smith assistant director of athletics communications. Smith, a former golf student-athlete at Carnegie Mellon and American, was the publishing and new media intern at the NCAA national office. He holds a business administration degree from Carnegie Mellon.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Missouri-St. Louis hired Lori Flanagan, who had been serving on an interim basis since August 2008 … Seattle Pacific named Erin O’Connell to the post permanently. She had been serving on an interim basis for eight months. A former rowing student-athlete and coach, O’Connell has been with Seattle Pacific for five years.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Houston Fancher resigned after 13 seasons at Appalachian State, the past nine as head coach.

Women’s basketball – Oregon did not renew Bev Smith’s contract. She had served eight seasons with the Ducks.

Football assistants – Arkansas-Monticello promoted Derek Warehime to offensive coordinator. He had been offensive line coach for the 2008 season.
