The Mid-American Conference appointed Jon Steinbrecher commissioner, effective July 1. Steinbrecher spent the past six years as commissioner of the Ohio Valley and also has experience leading the Mid-Continent Conference (now the Summit League). Steinbrecher replaces Rick Chryst, who announced in January that he will leave the conference on June 30.

Other transactions

Associate athletics director – District of Columbia hired Fred Reynolds III to oversee compliance at the school. He was interim associate athletics director for student services at Delaware State.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Dave Leitao resigned at Virginia after four seasons and a 63-60 record.

Field hockey assistant – American tabbed Katie Ridd, a former Wake Forest all-American and two-time national champion.

Football assistants – Montana hired alumnus and former assistant Chad Gerner to coach its offensive line. Gerner returned to Montana after six years coaching the offensive line at Wyoming. He graduated from Montana in 1993 … Colorado St.-Pueblo named Chris Symington to coach the ThunderWolves’ offensive line and coordinate the running game. Symington was most recently offensive line coach at Eastern Michigan.

Conferences

The Landmark Conference extended John A. Reeves’ contract for three years, keeping him as commissioner through July 2012.

Deaths

Coast Guard women’s basketball coach Alex Simonka died earlier this month. A Coast Guard graduate, Simonka retired from active duty in 1999. He was also the school’s athletics business manager. He was 52.
