Johnny “Red” Kerr, former Illinois basketball player, died February 26 from prostate cancer. He was 76. Kerr was a member of Illinois’ 1952 Final Four team and went on to play for the Syracuse Nationals, Philadelphia 76ers and the Baltimore Bullets. He later coached the Chicago Bulls, earning the Coach of the Year award for taking Chicago to the playoffs in 1966-67. He was a Bulls broadcaster for more than 30 years.

Other transactions

Presidents and chancellors – Dartmouth named Jim Yong Kim its new president. Kim, a physician and public health specialist, is known for his work against AIDS. He replaces James Wright.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Mike Daley retired from Nazareth with an overall record of 318-284.

Men’s and women’s soccer – James Beckmann resigned from the men’s program at Nebraska Wesleyan. He cited family reasons.

Deaths – Joseph “J.B.” Buono, athletic trainer at Iona for the past 50 years, died February 28. He was 97. Buono also was an assistant baseball coach for the Gaels.
